TIME project focuses upon; non-textual graphic image based communication, encodedmeaning, and varied scenarios and contexts where symbols are seen and used.









For its first part (sign design), I created a functional sign responding to a current or near-future scenario. The focus is on communicating meaning without text, by using visual language and symbolism.

The Brief 1. Design a sign with specific functionality and meaning within a chosen current or near-future scenario. The sign must demonstrate control of line, shape, form, scale, colour, and detail, using only black and white plus a maximum of two colours.


2. Produce a digitally rendered time-based media/motion output that communicates change over time. Both outcomes respond to shared project themes and workshops. The time-based media must share the same visual language as the sign and serve the same scenario, functioning as a temporal extension of the sign rather than a separate outcome.

Project
OverviewI developed a speculative near-future scenario to define the context for both outcomes. The sign and the time-based media were designed as functional elements within this scenario, sharing a unified visual language and narrative logic.

ScenarioSociety has reached a point where freedom of speech no longer exists. Any written content shared on social media must first be submitted to a state authority for approval. Only after receiving official confirmation can the content be published. In this context, a new sign becomes necessary. Once an idea is approved, a symbol appears on the screen to indicate that the thought has been authorised and is ready to be shared.

Process


     8 Figure          The symbolic use of numbers within political contexts was researched, with a particular focus on 88, a figure historically associated with totalitarian ideologies. As the visual system was based on the square, the form of the number 8 was constructed by combining two squares. This approach enabled a subtle reference to the number while maintaining formal consistency within the system.
     Shadow Element          The shadow element was developed through its direction. Rooted in the tension between rising right-wing authority and left-leaning opposition, the composition follows a left–right logic: light enters from the right and casts the shadow to the left, making the right’s influence over the left visually explicit. The shadow suggests pressure that operates subtly rather than overtly.
      Reversed Tick          The tick form was used in reverse. While the tick traditionally signifies approval, its inverted orientation introduces tension. It suggests that something is being validated, yet simultaneously implies that something is not functioning as it should.
